G.I. Gym Fitness Challenge

The G.I. Gym Fitness Challenge is a cross training contest hosted by G.I, Gym in North Raleigh. The Fitness Challenge can be combined with the October 4th Run For Their Lives 5K race for a combined "Fit & Fast" challenge. For Fit & Fast, Fitness Challenge point scores are converted to times which are deducted from your 5K race time. You have 3 options to participate: Fitness Challenge only, 5K Race only, or take the Fit & Fast challenge by registering separately for both events.

The "Fit" portion of the Fitness Challenge is a "Fight Gone Bad" style fitness challenge which takes place at G.I. Gym.  It consists of 3 rounds of 5 1-minute exercises with a 1-minute rest between each round.  Your Fit score is the total repetitions/calories for the entire 17-minute workout.  Google "Fight Gone Bad" for more info.

The 5 Fight Gone Bad exercises include:
  • Wall Ball (total reps with 10 ft target with 18 lb ball for men, 9 ft target with 12 lb ball for women) 
  • Sumo Dead Lift High Pole (total reps with 75 lb for men, 55 lb for women)
  • Box jumps (total reps with 24" box for men, 20" box for women)
  • Push Press (total reps with 75 lb for men, 55 lb for women)
  • Rowing (total calories burned per rowing machine display)
Scoring:  Total the repetitions for the first 4 exercise plus the calories burned in rowing to determine your Fitness Challenge score.  For the Fit & Fast challenge, this score is converted to a number of minutes the score by dividing by 25.  This time is then deducted from your run time in the Fight For Their Lives 5K.  (Whole minutes only - time is truncated.)  Example:  In the 3 5 minute rounds your total Fit score (reps + rowing calories) is 312.  To calculate your time deduction, divide your score of 312 by 25.  312 / 25 =  12.48 which is truncated to 12.  If you then run the 5K in 28:32, your Fit & Fast score is 28:32 - 12:00 = 16:32.

Scheduling:  The Fitness Challenge takes 17 minutes.  You must register for a specific start time.  Challenges start on the half hour on Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning.  The 5K Race starts at 9 am Saturday.  We request that those doing only the Fitness Challenge sign up for a Saturday time slot after 8 am, reserving the Friday and early Saturday times for those also running in the 5K race.

Location:  The Fitness Challenge takes place at G.I. Gym at 3125 Gresham Lake Rd, Suite 112 in Raleigh. 

YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM 3 COMPETITIONS:
  • G.I. Gym Fitness Challenge only:  Register for just the Fitness Challenge "Fight Gone Bad" contest.  Prizes are awarded for the male and female with the highest total repetitions/calories.
  • Run For Their Lives 5K Race only:  Register for just the 5K race at http://RunForTheirLives5K.ItsYourRace.com
  • Fit & Fast:  Compete in both the Fitness Challenge and the 5K race with combined results and prizes.  This requires TWO SEPARATE REGISTRATIONS.  You must register for this Fitness Challenge contest and for the Run For Their Lives 5K Race at http://RunForTheirLives5K.itsyourrace.com  
Free Fitness Challenge training & practice sessions!  Your $20 G.I. Gym Fitness Challenge registration includes free training sessions at G.I. Gym each Saturday from 11 am - noon until race week.
