Background

In 2004, Northport High School biology teacher David Deutsch was diagnosed with ALS.  Students of Northport High school rallied behind their teacher and started a grass roots fundraising effort called A Midwinter Night’s Dream.  To date, this grass roots student effort has raised 3 million dollars in the fight against ALS.  David’s legacy as a teacher was to allow students to dream, inspire them to reach goals, and push them to believe that nothing was impossible.  David believed that students have the power to change the world.  Northport High School and AMND are proof that students can make a difference.  David’s legacy grows in every student at Northport High school and we believe his ideology can be spread to other students and school districts.  AMND has always worked closely with the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins, collaborating as funding partners and with internship placements.  Team Packard is a natural progression of this successful partnership.  The goal of Team Packard is to empower students to make a difference in the fight against ALS and to promote service learning and collaboration amongst students and school communities in the program.  This year Team Packard has 17 schools registered in the program.

Newsday has described the students of A Midwinter Night’s Dream as, “everything that is good about our youth.” In 2004 when a second teacher in the Northport School District was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) a group of students decided that it was time to take action. They organized a basketball tournament within the Northport community and raised $25,000. In the nine years following this basketball tournament A Midwinter Night’s Dream has raised $3 million dollars for ALS research and opened their own ALS research lab while always continuing to dream big. Featured in the NY Times, People Magazine and Newsday, AMND has become a national phenomenon. Hilary Rodham Clinton, United States Secretary of State and former NY senator has stated, “The compassion and dedication demonstrated by Northport High School students is a shining example of how each of us can make a difference in the lives of others.”
